Picking Podcasts [2]

Hi Pals,

I listen to around 30 hours of podcast material a week as I’m lucky enough to have a Job where I’m allowed to wear headphones. Depending on what I’m working on, I’ll swap it between music and podcasts. To check out my previously recommended podcasts, check here.

So, while you’re waiting for a mate, sitting in the doctors office for an extra 30 minutes or you’re on a long trip – here’s another list to get you through it.

Not all of them I liked, which I’ll elaborate on – and some I loved. Be aware, Sub Category is just the term I’ve put in to shorten “what I believe it’s all about ” not what it might be.

Podcasts can be listened to on Apple Podcasts, Google Play and Spotify. All links (no affiliates) take you to their main website.

Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and a wonderful cast bring you The Mysterious Secrets of Uncle Bertie’s Botanarium’ builds a world full of elitism, characters, adventure and turmoil. It’s what I’d imagine some of the first expeditions to feel like, mixed with a bit more adventure.
Clements character is “leading an expedition to where his uncle, a defamed botanist, disappeared,” said Clement. “He left on an expedition and never came back, so he’s trying to find him and launching his own expedition.”
Full of story telling, song you really need to be involved in this podcast to follow it along.
It’s not 100% my cup of tea, but people really loved it.

The Bright Sessions was a podcast I’d only downloaded one episode of to see if I was interested and I got hooked. At 50 minutes average, I streamed 6 episodes on data and my bill that month was uh, not fun.
I love this podcast so, so, so much. It’s been named one of the best podcasts by iTunes, Wired, IndieWire and Popular Science as well as won 7 awards.
Set in a world of super-powers, it follows the therapy sessions of a range of characters. We follow Dr Bright while trying to help out her super-powered clients. Easy to listen to and easy to follow. The voices are wonderful. They have LGBT characters. The only section I didn’t like is when they actually had kissing noises – but that’s just me.
It’s set to be released as a Television Series and a range of books are coming out later too!

Heaven’s Gate was a cult back in the 1990s and gained mass media attention when in 1997 they had a mass suicide in which thirty-nine people took their own lives. It explores the lives of characters then and now, 20 years later. The host was previously part of a cult himself, giving him a bit more depth and understanding into why they may have done it. I wasn’t familiar with the story as I was pretty young, and in Australia when it happened. This gave a good insight and like any good true crime podcast, it goes very in depth.

Read a brilliant article regarding the Detective Podcast by crimefeed here. Until I did research for this podcast to give you a bit of information, I’d been thinking it was just an amazing fictional podcast… turns out it’s real! I love the host’s voice, stories and real-life-attitude to being a Detective.

From the Producers of hit podcast Serial, S-Town is the investigation of a murder then life. It’s an odd story to follow, and I really don’t know how to feel about it. Focused around John. B McLemore in his southern American town, reached out to This American Life regarding a murder believed to have been committed in his hometown of Woodstock. It gives us insight into his life, which becomes more and more entwined with the people around him. I would recommend giving this a listen and creating your own opinion. Don’t read up about it because a lot of articles have spoilers. I didn’t really know anything about it apart from it was originally investigating a possible murder.

Episodes: 22 (Season 1)
Episode Length: 30 mins
Awards:

I’ve personally been trying to learn Spanish for 4-5 years (I mean, I’m half heartedly doing it) but Doorway to Mexico podcast does make it easier as it takes real situations; airports, hotels, coffee and even getting pulled over by police. It explains situations with an American Family; father who speaks Spanish, Mother who is uncomfortable speaking and a daughter learning as well as their guild around Mexico. These are free episodes but they have a range of learning guilds as well.
